BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Louisiana's public schools will start classes without guidance from the state education board about a new law that lets science teachers change how they teach topics like evolution and global warming. Under the new law, teachers will be able to supplement school science textbooks with other materials. The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education can ban supplemental materials it deems inappropriate. BESE President Linda Johnson says she expects the board to adopt policies by the end of the year. Johnson says her priority is to keep the Department of Education out of court. Supporters of the new law say the change promotes critical thinking. Opponents say it was designed to add religion teachings to science classes. ___ Information from: The Times-Picayune, http://www.timespicayune.com |
