NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Former Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Revius Ortique Jr. has died of complications from a stroke. He was 84.

One of the current state Supreme Court justices, Kitty Kimball, confirmed to the Associated Press that Ortique died Sunday.

Ortique was a well known civil rights lawyer who became the first black justice on the Louisiana Supreme Court.

He was elected in 1992 and had to step down in June 1994 when he turned 70, the mandatory judicial retirement age.
