Want to build your own pirogue in just one day? It can be done at the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum on Saturday, April 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Not a boat builder? Not a problem. No experience is necessary. The Maritime Museum provides experienced pirogue and boat builders to assist you from bow to stern. “All you need is the desire to feel the pride of ownership when you build a boat yourself,” says Bob Doolittle, a Boat Building Instructor at the Maritime Museum. “People are astonished that they can build their very own pirogue and take it home the same day.” The Build-a-Pirogue-in-a-Day class is open to up to 10 teams of at least two persons each. (Anyone under 18 is required to have an adult partner.) Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The class is $500 and includes all building materials plus lunch. After registering, participants will given a list of hand tools needed for class. The individuals, families, or teams who have built pirogues at the Maritime Museum are as unique as the crafts they have built—father/son, mother/son, and father/daughter teams; teams celebrating special birthdays or anniversaries; and even a grandparent team that built a pink pirogue—yes, a pink pirogue named Peanut for their six-year-old granddaughter aptly nicknamed Peanut. The historic value of the pirogue dates back to early in Louisiana culture when these majestic craft were built to “float on the morning dew.” To continue the art of boat-building, build your own pirogue. Call the Maritime Museum to register at (985) 845-9200. Visa or MasterCard is accepted. The proceeds benefit the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum, an educational nonprofit that offers exhibits and unique hands-on programs that bring Louisiana’s maritime history to life. The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4:00 p.m. For additional information, call the Maritime Museum at (985) 845-9200. |
