NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Tulane head baseball coach Rick Jones agreed Thursday to a contract running through 2015, amounting to a three-year extension beyond his previous deal.
Jones, 54, has been coaching in college for 27 seasons, the last 15 years at Tulane, where a new on-campus baseball stadium opened late last month.
"It's no secret that this is where I want to finish my career and this extension gives me that opportunity," Jones said. "My love for this university and New Orleans has been stated many times and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."
Jones has a record of 607-287-1 at Tulane, needing 34 more victories for the school record.
Since Jones took over in the 1994 season, Tulane has reached the NCAA regionals 11 times, including a school-record nine consecutive trips from 1998-2006. Jones also has coached the Green Wave to three regional championships, as well as trips to the College World Series in 2001 and 2005.
"It was our intent following the 2005 College World Series to synchronize an announcement of a contract extension for Rick Jones with the opening of the new stadium, but that was obviously delayed," athletic director Rick Dickson said. "This extension will secure Tulane's baseball future through the Rick Jones era and the completion of his coaching career." |
