WGSO NEWSLETTER FOR FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2008 PDF Print E-mail
By Ken Trahan
Friday, February 15 2008
Good morning and welcome to our weekly newsletter from your friends at WGSO, 990 AM. We took last week off for Mardi Gras but are glad to be back with you to provide more information about WGSO! WEEKLY ACCOMPLISHMENTS
**It was another banner day with 10 gallons of gas for 99 cents each at Top Fuel on Pontchartrain Drive in Slidell on Valentine's Day. The cars were lined up on Pontchartrain Drive well before the 4 PM start and WGSO's Ed Clancy, Jeff Crouere, Ken Trahan, Harry Finch, Kirk Johnson, Nathan Ocmond, Brigit Kirchofer, and Felder Iavarone were on hand to pump gas, hand out flowers, hand out miniature footballs, and energy drinks to the first 100 listeners/consumers. Unfortunately, we had to turn some patrons away, a clear indication of the rousing success of the day. WGSO'S Bernie Cyrus did his Weekday with Bernie show live with Emmanuel Pepis producing and Dainya Jay and Randy Pistorius lending a hand. The winner of our Valentine's Day special gift was Susan Morgan of Covington, who receives $1,000 in gift certificates from various sponsors. Thank you for listening and supporting WGSO, Susan! All in all, it was a great day and Ed Clancy managed to avoid pumping Diesel fuel into regular gas tanks!
Speaking of Valentine's Day, if anyone received flowers from someone named "Tom," please see Mary Latter immediately!
**Our live restaurant days started a week ago with Ed Clancy broadcasting live from The Rib Room in Metairie. Many thanks to Danny Miller for aiding with equipment at the last minute. T
**Today, Ed is live from Andrea's Northern Italian Cuisine on Causeway and Ridgelake in Metairie with award-winning chef Andrea Apuzzo.
**Ed also served as an announcer/judge/emcee for the Family Gras celebration Mardi Gras Day in Metairie.
**We were blessed to launch our WGSO Morning News Hour from 7 to 8 AM and the WGSO News at Noon from Noon-1 PM this past week. This long-anticipated addition went off extremely well, thanks to the hard work and preparation of News Director Terry Easley. Ed Clancy chipped in solid fashion. You can now get wall-to-wall information while you are driving to work and to and from lunch like no other broadcast entity in the market can offer right here on WGSO, 990 AM and at WGSO.com.
**Jude Young, George and Emmanuel Pepis, Ed Daniels, and Ken Trahan all did live shows from the LHSAA State Wrestling Championships at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner before a record crowd of nearly 11,000 fans. Ken handled the public address announcing for the finals on Saturday night.
**WGSO welcomes Dr. Jim Hurrell as a permanent addition to the WGSO Pet Show with Nancy Nolan. It is great to have you on-board!
**Record-setting Bo McCalebb's brilliant career at UNO continued. McCalebb hit the game-winning shot with 20 seconds left to lift UNO to a 79-78 win at Arkansas State.

ATTA BOY
**Kudos to Jeff Crouere for holding Ray Nagin and the Times-Picayune accountable in the Mayor's playful pointing of a rifle at Police Chief Warren Riley. Jeff's "Ringside Politics with a Punch" show (8 AM-Noon) continues to draw new callers and listeners to WGSO.
**Bernie Cyrus scored with a visit from Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne and by securing a visit with George Rodrigue on his show (3-6 PM).
**Ed Clancy had a compelling visit with Einav Avidan, an Israeli Community "Shlicha," who detailed U.S.-Israeli relations, the Palestinian state, misconceptions about her homeland, politics, and military.
**Michael Green and Ken Trahan landed former NBA and ABA All-Star Bobby Jones on the Life Resources Bottom Line Sports Hour (Thursday nights).
**Terry Easley had exclusive features on the homeless at Claiborne Avenue and with neighbors of the alleged Chinese spies in New Orleans, enhancing WGSO's image as a reliable, solid, fresh source for news.
**Mike Janssen took the time to provide live updates all throughout the day when significant thunderstorms and tornadoes struck South Louisiana, warning those in harm's way and giving up-to-date information on the conditions. Don't forget to watch "Weather Now" with Mike on WGNO-TV, ABC 26 weekdays from 6-7 AM.
**Steve Malzberg (weeknights 10 PM-Midnight) had a great show on Super Tuesday with live reports, updates, sound from candidates, and analysis from many top folks in the media business Mardi Gras night.

ADDITIONS
As mentioned, the WGSO Morning News Hour (following Rick and Bubba) and the WGSO News at Noon Hour debuted successfully. Listen soon for more information in the 5 PM hour during the Bernie Cyrus Show. And Dr. Jim Hurrell joined Nancy Nolan on the WGSO Pet Show (Saturday mornings at 9 AM).

WGSO welcomes our newest sponsors, including Andrea's Restaurant, Grand Isle Restaurant, Grillot Restaurant, Makin' Dough Pizzeria, Marguerites Cakes, Maurice Carriere, Northshore Transmissions, Omni Royal Orleans, Piper's Flooring and Interiors, Rod-N-Style, S&S Tree & Stump Removal, Semolina Bistro Italia, Smokey's Discount Tobacco, The Floor Men, and Spring Together with Nextel. GET WELL
We are pleased to announce that WGSO founder Mike Starr has successful back surgery and is recovering comfortably and the prognosis for a full recovery is good. We continue to extend our thoughts and prayers for Don Trahan, uncle of Ken, who is battling cancer, and Jeff Crouere's father, who continues his battle with serious health issues.
