Covington, LA – "ONE DREAM, ONE WORLD AND ONE COMMUNITY", is the theme of our 2008 Martin Luther King Celebration. This year in addition to the traditional parade and program held on January 21st in the City of Covington, a full week of community events and activities are planned.
With great pride, the Martin Luther King Celebration Committee and the City of Covington officially invite people of all racial and ethic backgrounds to celebrate Dr. King’s commitment to community with us. The celebration begins on Friday, January 18, 2008 with a Youth "Dream" Concert, 7:00 p.m., at the Fuhrmann Auditorium, Greater Covington Center, 317 N. Jefferson St. Youth throughout the area are invited to display their talents and their "dreams".
A community day of service is scheduled for Saturday, January 19th, 2008. The community is asked to volunteer in any capacity or join District A at 8:00 a.m. at Rev. Peter Atkins Park for a neighborhood clean-up. Participants will gather for a free fish fry at 1:00 p.m.
MLK Birthday Celebrations begin on Monday, January 21st, 2008 with the Mayor of Covington, Honorable Candace Watkins, sponsoring a Prayer Breakfast at the Bogue Falaya Hall in the Greater Covington Center, 317 N Jefferson Avenue. Brother Raymond Bulliard, FSC, Principal of Saint Paul School, will be the guest speaker. The program will be from 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. with breakfast being served between 8:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m..
Immediately following the breakfast, staging for the "Drum Major for Justice" parade will begin at the Rev. Peter Atkins Park with the parade commencing at 10:15 a.m. The parade route is down 28th Avenue to Jefferson St. and ending at the Fuhrmann Auditorium. The Birthday Commemorative Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. featuring once again, the Greater Covington Gospel Youth Choir. The keynote speaker will be Rev. Alfred Young, Jr., pastor of Faith Bible Church and Covenant Christian Church. Following the service, the celebration will end at Rev. Peter Atkins Park, with an afternoon of food and fellowship.
The Greater Covington Chapter of the NAACP, in an effort to keep Dr. King's legacy alive, is once again sponsoring a photograph, picture, poster and essay contest. Submissions should reflect this year's theme and must be delivered to the City of Covington Economic Development Office, 317 N. Jefferson St., Suite 120, by noon, January 18th, 2008. Awards will be given for 8th grade and under and 9th grade and above. Children and adults are urged to enter. Winners will be announced at the Commemorative Service.
