COVINGTON, La. - Compassionate St. Tammany Parish citizens rushed to give six-year-old Covington resident Madelyn Egan a shot at life Tuesday at the State Police Troop L blood drive with donating posts at the local Blood Center and the Troop L office.
State Police Trooper First Class Louis Calato said the flood of citizens from the region was awe-inspiring and that the drive surpassed the desired goal. “We were shooting for around 40 pints,” Calato said. “Just at Troop L alone we had like 59 bags of blood that were given and then we had numerous that were given at the blood center also because we just couldn’t handle the amount of people that were coming in.” Calato said Egan only needs enough blood for a month of transfusions for her recovery from leukemia and a bone marrow transplant. Despite those needs he believes the drive collected nearly 100 pints in all. He said the extra blood will go to help others in need. Calato added he is quite pleased with the turnout and hopes the drive will heighten awareness of the needs of others this holiday season. |
