Run for Congress By Davis Likely PDF Print E-mail

SLIDELL, LA. - The St. Tammany Parish President is finally speaking out about his possible run for Congress. Kevin Davis has kept very quiet about his future intentions, up until this point, and now he’s talking about joining what’s becoming a very crowded race to fill Governor-Elect Bobby Jindal’s seat.

WGSO Talk Show Host and ABC26 Political Analyst Jeff Crouere said Kevin Davis would have strong support, “I would say among the North Shore candidates, he’s the leading candidate.”

Davis is not an official candidate yet, but for the first time on Sunday, he announced his intentions during “The Sunday Source,” on WGSO North Shore 990, “I am considering the Congress. I have put together an exploratory committee and I’m looking at that.”

Crouere said, “Now is the time to really do it because if he would have really jumped into the race before hand people would have really been distracted by all of the other races going on.”

Slidell Mayor Ben Morris jumped in the race early and said Monday, “It’s going to be interesting to see who finally shows up. I’ve told a couple of them, I’ve made my decision, I’m gonna run and who else runs, it’s a decision they have to make.”

Hurricane Katrina and response to the storm will be a big part of the race to fill Jindal’s seat. Morris said the decision to enter the race was an easy one for him, “I’ve been on the front lines with this and I said maybe I can get up there and do something and not let this ever happen again. Recovery is huge for this area.”
Davis is also well known for his Post-Katrina work but Croure said he will have to put together a team quickly and broaden his platform, “What his challenge is, is to create more of an image of him than just the Katrina recovery guy. He needs to really be talking about these national issues that a congressman really works on such as the fiscal issues, the war in Iraq, healthcare, education, all of these other issues.”

Up until now, the Parish President has only talked about St. Tammny projects, like a new Children’s Museum at the Trace and fixing up infrastructure and roads across the Parish; however, Davis said accomplishing those goals may now be done differently, “There are positions in other areas that open at times that I may be able to finish these things by assisting.”

Also already in the race, on the North Shore, State Representative Tim Burns and former Governor Dave Treen and on the South Shore, State Senator-Elect Steve Scalise. The primary election is set for March 8th.
