COVINGTON, La. - Police have taken a significant bite out of crime in the past several months, since the addition of the street crimes division in Covington has lowered the city crime rates to pre-Katrina numbers.
Covington Police Lt. Jack West said the street crimes division is hitting the drug dealers hard and arresting as many as two a week. He said many of these dealers are then switching sides and informing the police on other dealers in the area.
“We’ve got a whole fleet of drug dealers working for us right now going after the bigger guys,” West said. “You’ve got shifts out there that have over 100 arrests in a month.”
West said many other forms of crime directly related to drugs are also decreasing because drug dealers are being taken off the street. He said the past two years of hard work combating the surge of drugs brought to the city after Katrina is finally paying off for his department.
West added Covington Police will be on a heightened state of awareness now that the city is heading into the holiday season.
