CAPITOL HILL (AP) - Donald Rumsfeld says "the system" failed after the friendly fire death of Army Ranger Pat Tillman in Afghanistan. But neither he nor other retired Pentagon brass would take the blame. In his first appearance on Capitol Hill since he was replaced as Defense Secretary, Rumsfeld is rejecting any personal responsibility for the military's response to the friendly-fire death of former NFL player Pat Tillman in Afghanistan. It was five weeks before the military confirmed that Tillman was not killed by enemy fire. Rumsfeld told a House committee he regrets the Pentagon's five-week delay in telling the truth about how Tillman died. During the House committee hearing on the cover-up of the details of the death, the panel's Democratic chairman said the concealment of Tillman's friendly fire death caused Americans to "question the integrity'' of the government. But Rumsfeld testified that he had encouraged his Pentagon underlings to tell the truth. |
