PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) _ Nike says it has suspended its contract with Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and will pull goods with his name off the shelves at stores the company owns. Meanwhile, Reebok says it will stop selling Vick's replica jersey at retail stores and through its Web site.
The moves come one day after Vick pleaded not guilty to federal dogfighting charges in Richmond, Virginia. A statement from Nike says it has not terminated the contract, as animal-rights activists had urged the company to do. Nike had previously told retailers it would not release a fifth signature shoe this summer. Reebok does not have a business relationship with Vick, but the company is the official supplier of apparel and equipment to all 32 NFL teams. |
