ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Supreme Court on Monday rejected Republican Norm Coleman's request to count an additional 654 rejected absentee ballots in his weeks-old Senate showdown with Democrat Al Franken.

The ruling clears the way for the state Canvassing Board to certify results showing Franken the winner after the Supreme Court said the issue is best settled in a post-count lawsuit.

NY teen gets 18 years for killing man on Halloween PDF Print E-mail

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — A teenager who shot and killed a New York security guard who confronted egg-throwing youths on Halloween has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

A judge imposed the second-degree murder sentence Monday on 19-year-old Nyanda Charley of Mount Vernon.

Charley had admitted to shooting 52-year-old Neville Webb on Halloween in 2007. The guard had tried to chase off a group of youths throwing eggs nea . . .

Decatur, Ala., organized crime unit chief missing PDF Print E-mail

DECATUR, Ala. (AP) — Authorities are searching for the head of a northern Alabama city's organized crime unit who went missing over the weekend.

Investigators say 48-year-old Sgt. Faron White was last seen working late Friday in his Decatur office where police found signs of a struggle. His family reported him missing Saturday.

A statement from the Decatur Police Department listed White's status as "missing/endangered."

Judge gives more time for Blagojevich indictment PDF Print E-mail

CHICAGO (AP) — A federal judge in Chicago has given prosecutors an additional three months to present evidence and obtain an indictment in the corruption case against Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Chief Judge James Holderman granted the extension Monday, saying the case against Blagojevich is too complex to expect prosecutors to obtain an indictment by a Jan. 7 deadline.

He set an April 7 deadline instead.

Group sues EPA over Chesapeake Bay cleanup PDF Print E-mail

WASHINGTON (AP) — A conservation group is suing to force the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to enforce the law and clean up the polluted Chesapeake Bay.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation President William Baker says scientists know how to revive the nation's largest estuary. He says all that's missing is the political will to enforce the federal Clean Water Act.
