SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Sponsors of California's voter-approved gay marriage ban accused Attorney General Jerry Brown on Monday of advancing a far-fetched legal theory to justify overturning it.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal judge on Monday reinstated an Islamic charity's lawsuit challenging a Bush administration surveillance program.

U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker said there is enough primary evidence showing the charity might have been the target of government-tapped telephone calls that were done without court approval under the administration's so-called Terrorist Surveillance Program.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The nation's largest owner of timberland disclosed Monday that it will no longer pursue changes in agreements governing its use of U.S. Forest Service roads — changes that critics complained could transform forests into housing subdivisions.

Griffin B. Bell

ATLANTA (AP) — Griffin B. Bell, the shrewd Southern lawyer who grew up with Jimmy Carter and later became U.S. attorney general after Carter was elected president, died Monday. He was 90.

Bell died around 10 a.m. of kidney failure, said Diana Lewis, a spokeswoman for Piedmont Hospital. He was being treated at the Atlanta hospital for complications from pancreatic cancer and kidney disease, she said.
